Beethoven’s 5th, Nat King Cole and Other Secret Weapons

I am strong, tough and ready around the clock. Not only that I closely guard my emotions at all times, trying to remain calm in the face of adversity, when others panic.  I like to kick ass and take no prisoners when I need to.  Or maybe that’s not true anymore and I’ve become a softy.

There have only been two times in my life it has happened, no, I am wrong, maybe three times, I guess.

Once, was when I was sitting in the audience with my friend, some years ago, listening to a symphony orchestra play Beethoven’s 5th symphony.

The other time was today, sitting drinking coffee with my friend, prior to going to church and we were listening to the overhead music playing Nat King Cole’s Unforgettable.

My body armor was thrown to the ground on each of these occasions, my trusty sword fell to the floor and small tears tried to form immediately in my eyes and of course, I courageously held them back. Small ones, mind you, but they came, and I tried to look away, but she saw it, both times and asked, “Why Carson, are your eyes watering.”

I said, “I don’t know, but it just suddenly happened to me and I had absolutely no control over it. Both songs, separately, on distant occasions, produced the same effect, and no one else around me it seemed, felt the same thing.  I had no explanation at all.  But I know, it is highly likely it will hit me again, each time I hear either one.

So, there you have it.  I have now given my enemies two secret weapons that can potentially disarm me quickly and knock me off guard for a few moments.  However, there is one more secret weapon.  This singer, the late Al Jarreau sang many songs, for sure.  Yet there is only one of his famous ones that hits my soul hard. And, it is only one sentence on verse 5 of one of his songs, that does it to me.  Just one single sentence he sings.

Does anyone know what song this is, and what sentence I am referring to?  Go ahead and guess, and write in the comments if you want.

But don’t worry, I am still tough.  However, if any of my enemies get any smart ideas now, and want to disarm me and remove my armor briefly by throwing one of these songs at me, please beware.  I am not afraid of these secret weapons.  You know why?

I have no fear because I have the power of Jesus Christ deep within my soul, and I surrender to no man, but I do surrender to the gift of the love of God and his son Jesus Christ.

To be honest, I’m not familiar with Al Jarreau’s repertoire .. I went to listen to him .. I’ll write my own version later ..
    Thanks for your creativity

  3. ok that’s a good guess. But not the correct answer regarding the Al Jarreau song I was referring to. It is another famous song he sang, with a famous line on the 5th verse

  4. Yes, you won! That verse is from his song “Mornin”. “I know I can, like any man, reach out my hand… and touch the Face of God”
