The Whiskey is Staring at Me

I don’t know why, but every time I hear the word Whiskey, or in fact, see a bottle, it reminds me of the bar scene in the great movie with Clint Eastwood: The Outlaw Josey Wales. It is a great western with many scenes and quotes that I’ll never forget like dieing ain’t much of a living, or you gonna pull them pistols or just whistle dixie?  Ok, so it’s not exactly a romantic movie, although Clint does throw in a little romance at the end.  But I will now get back to the point at hand.  There is a scene where Josey Wales walks into a bar and plops down a case of Whiskey for all the poor thirsty patrons, then says, “Whiskey for everyone.”

So, I remember that scene and figure every time a cowboy comes into a bar, he says, Whiskey!

A young colleague of mine —who is also an Army Ranger, asked me for some help recently and I told him of course, and gave him some help.  And with his words of thanks later, he presented me with a bottle of Breckenridge Whiskey.   I’ve never had this before, and I do appreciate the gift of gratitude.  But the bottle is still sitting on my table, staring at me as I walk around, and I am wondering, should I take a shot of it tonight?

I’m here alone, and I don’t usually drink alone, but I think my cat counts as company, don’t you think?

So, I’ve decided to take a shot, or perhaps on the rocks, and maybe cook some popcorn the old-fashioned way, in a pan, with oil and butter.  Hmmm.  And then, I’m going to silently toast my respectful colleague as well, because respect goes both ways.

And by the way, although it is a 1976 movie, I do recommend that you rent or download the Outlaw Josey Wales, have a drink and eat some popcorn with your favorite person, or fluffy animal, and remember who gave you the idea.

I reckon very few of my readers have seen the Outlaw Josey Wales, but if you have, I will drink a toast to you

Cheers

  1. A fun, delightful piece of writing this is. I absolutely love how the whiskey bottle takes on its own persona and stares at its owner. This author has a clever, witty talent for giving human traits to inanimate objects. So enjoyable. And yes Dr. Carson, cats make great happy hour and movie companions. In my case, it would be my beagle. And she would also demand some popcorn tossed her way. A little Margarita with a splash of extra lime, some popcorn, my dog, and The Outlaw Josey Wales staring back at us. Thanks for the idea Dr. Carson. And cheers back to you.

  2. Cheers to that! A bottle of Breckenridge and some old-fashioned stovetop popcorn sounds like the perfect evening. And yes, the cat absolutely counts as company! I love the connection between the Ranger’s gift and the old basic training spirit. I’ll have to re-watch Josey Wales now—thanks for the inspiration!

  3. There is something so poetic about whiskey ‘staring’ at someone. The author captures that internal debate we all have perfectly. I love the contrast between the rowdy ‘Whiskey for everyone!’ movie trope and the quiet, respectful toast to a colleague at home. It’s a great look at how cinema shapes our everyday moments. Pour a glass for me.

  4. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this piece. The way you transition from a gritty movie scene to the quiet reality of a bottle ‘staring’ at you on the table is wonderful writing. It turns a simple drink into a moment of reflection on respect and gratitude. It’s a great reminder that the best gifts aren’t just about the contents, but the mutual respect they represent

  5. You’ve got great taste! The Outlaw Josey Wales is easily one of Eastwood’s best—’endeavor to persevere,’ right? I love how a simple gift from a colleague triggered such a specific, cinematic memory. There’s something very ‘modern-day cowboy’ about an Army Ranger gifting whiskey as a thank-you. Enjoy that drink; you’ve earned the right to ‘whistle Dixie’ or just relax with your cat.
