“Just fly the plane Carson, don’t let the plane fly you.”
Much to his flight instructor’s chagrin, it took Carson a perhaps little too long to understand the general meaning of this statement, but, eventually he did, and lived to tell a few stories about his private flying days.
Carson attended that military academy up in the mountains that the cadets affectionately call the “blue zoo” and did well athletically and academically, and in fact, credits varsity athletics with helping him survive the hazing, which back then, was quite intense. But it seems Carson was not blessed with good enough vision to be a military pilot, so he chose to go into Medicine to become a doctor instead. So the brass informed him that he could apply to medical school, but only after five years of service. This patriotic young man needed to make an agonizing decision at that young age to stay or leave to go to a civilian medical school, so he left. But not so easy. The colonel was obligated to counsel him, since he was in the top ranks of the class. He said, “Carson, we give you three square meals a day, and you don’t need to worry about picking out your clothes. And what’s more Carson, you may fail in the civilian world.”
Stunned with this blunt statement, Carson said, “Thanks for the advice Colonel, but I think I will take my chances.”
So, he went back to the Midwest and received his medical degree, got married and failed miserably in this marriage, went on to residency and specialty fellowships, and then eventually settled down into practice in the Mountain west.
