Ollie is Invited to Washington

The Chief of Staff and two secret service agents escorted Ollie into the Oval office, and the President was already sitting behind his desk. His escorts left Ollie alone in front of the President, but sat in the back of the room, observing and listening to the conversation. The president and Ollie shook hands.

“Have a seat, Mr. um, Ollie.  It is a pleasure to meet you, but tell me, do you have a last name?”

“The agency assigned me a name years ago, for my protection after certain events, but I didn’t like it, so I called myself Ollie.”

“I see”, said the president glancing at his watch for the longest time, as if he couldn’t read the digits. “Let’s get down to business here. My time is precious as the leader of the free world, and my Chief of Staff tells me that I can have fifteen minutes with you only, before I must meet with the Secretary of Education.  He said to me that someone important believes you may have something to say to me, especially in your final years. And the truth is, I’ve heard stories about you and your previous life, and I didn’t think the legend was still alive.”

“Final years? Yeah, you’re not the first to comment on that and I am surprised, and blessed that I am still alive.”  Ollie couldn’t help but laugh and show a huge smile. He studied the president, and realized he had no clue who he really was or why it mattered.

“Well, you know Ollie, I meant that you are one hundred years old and all and —”

“It’s all ancient history now, Mr. President, for sure, and my actions in the past have been kept secret by the government, but it’s naïve  to think evil is no longer a threat to our way of life, and may in fact be dwelling within our own borders, smoldering inside a politically correct disguise, perhaps within the capitol itself.  Your predecessors before you refused to meet me, thinking it is meaningless crap, but back then, a previous president told the CIA director to thank me for eliminating the evil one, and for finding the traitor amongst us who I once loved, and then, they kept me hidden and out of trouble.”

“How dare you come in to my office and say these things! Aren’t you aware that I am the protector of this country and under my leadership we will all thrive through equity and inclusion? I will never humble myself, especially to an old man who says he is a hero”

Ollie stared at him, emotionless, but at the same time, his brow showed a worried furrow when he realized he was getting nowhere with a stubborn president.  “If you will recall, I never said I was a hero.  I am simply blessed with certain skills and a love of my country.”

“I recall everything, Mr. Ollie. You have three minutes left before I send you away and hopefully, I won’t see you again.”

Ollie pulled out a note pad, and wrote down a bible verse, then said to the president, “Please read this several times and memorize it for me after I leave today.”

Isaiah 40: 28-31

Do you not know? Have you not heard?  The Lord is the everlasting God. The creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding, no one can fathom.  He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary and young men stumble and fall.  But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.

The president took the paper, looked at it briefly, then tossed it into a pile on his desk. He then motioned to the secret service agents to come and escort Ollie out, but before they approached him, Ollie was able to tack a small cross pin onto the wood of the president’s desk when he wasn’t looking.  They both stood up and the president said, “The oval office is not a church service. Goodbye old man, and please try to enjoy the rest of your life.”

Ollie had his trusty cane in his right hand and noticed the president shuffling with an unsteady gate towards him, and then he tripped and fell, but before he hit the floor, Ollie leaped forward and caught the president in his arms, pulling him back up before the secret service agents could reach him.

Ollie stepped away, after catching the president, picked up his cane to stabilize his walk, letting the agents continue to help the president. “Mr. President, I will continue to use my blessings to serve the good in humanity, as long as I remain alive.  You may not think you need me, but if you do, your men know how to find me and I will be happy to serve to the best of my ability at my age.”

Ollie was then escorted out of the White House by the secret service, who thanked him for catching the president’s fall, and once outside the capitol,  his shadow man joined him and asked  him how it went.

“I tried my best. The president needs wisdom and good counsel, but he doesn’t understand humility, it seems.   But I am sure I will be back before I leave this lovely, but brutal earth.”
